Buriton
Hamilton-Baillie Associates prepared a feasibility study for the Parish of Buriton in 2007. The proposals for small scale sensitive interventions to reverse the decline in streetscape and to emphasize the particular qualities of the village streets were enthusiasticaly received at a series of public meetings.
Initial work has now been completed on the first two phases of improvements around the Maple Inn pub (formerly the Master Roberts), to slow traffic, improve the coherence of the public realm, and to provide a distinctive entry point into the village. Funding came from Hampshire County Council, East Hampshire District Council, the South Downs AONB Joint Committee, developer contributions and other sources.
Buriton provides an excellent case study for illustrating what can be achieved by an enthusiastic Parish Council, with limited resources. The village is a key location within the new South Downs National Park, and many of the lessons learnt will inform future policies for highways in historic villages.
