Rogate

Rogate is a cross-roads village on the A272 that links Winchester and Petersfield to Midhurst and beyond. It lies within the new South Downs National Park. With around 1,600 inhabitants, a fine village pub, a small village shop and a popular primary school, Rogate is a good example of an important small settlement under severe pressure from traffic.

Speeds are uncomfortably high, crossings are difficult, and the physical fabric of the village is being damaged by large vehicles. Drivers show little awareness of the presence and unique context of the village.

Hamilton-Baillie Associates have produced an initial report and set of recommendations for addressing some of the traffic issues, as a contribution towards Rogate’s emerging Neighbourhood Plan. The proposals were presented and debated locally in June 2014. It is hoped that Rogate will develop as a pilot project for new ways to tackle traffic engineering and road management in rural villages.
