Headed by Edinburgh Architects Smith Scott Mullan Associates, a masterplan and urban design strategy was completed for Dumfries and Galloway Council. The masterplan addressed the problems and opportunities created by the relocation of the ferry terminal, and the need to transform the urban quality of the town centre and its magnificent waterfront.

A series of local events and workshops drew together ideas and preferences from local businesses and residents.  The complex street network and the curve of the waterfront have been damaged by recent developments, insensitive highway engineering and the paraphenalia associated with a port. George Street at the centre of the town was one of a number of civic spaces restored, shifting the emphasis away from highways to pedestrian links to the waterfront.

The project was awarded the Scottish Design Award for Public Realm and Landscaping.
