Felixstowe
The simple, economic regeneration of Hamilton Road, the principle shopping street at the centre of the seaside town of Felixstowe, was completed in December 2010. Implemented by Suffolk County Council advised by Hamilton-Baillie Associates, the modest yet effective scheme has transformed a previously cluttered and unsatisfactory street with a poor safety record into a civilised low-speed space.
Pedestrian activity dominates, although the street remains open to some traffic and delivery vehicles. Good quality concrete paviours allow the street to respond to trading patterns and activities, and an increase in outdoor life and pedestrian footfall has already been noted.
The project won the Chartered Instute of Highways & Transportation Street Design “Best Street Design” Award for 2011. The Project Officer was Luke Barber of Suffolk County Council.
