London

Exhibition Road

The Royal Borough Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster City Council and Transport for London have transformed this historic street into one of the capital’s great public spaces, highlighting the rich urban context of London’s museums and institutions. The design was led by Dixon Jones Architects. The scheme has removed the inadequate pavements and uncomfortable crossings of the area to create an exemplar street, with low traffic speeds and a pedestrian-dominated environment, suited to its unique role and rich cultural context.

The scheme was completed in early 2012, and continues to be carefully monitored for speeds, pedestrian behaviour, accidents and vehicular flows. A project-specific tactile language has been developed with support from the Guide Dogs for the Blind and RNIB to assist with navigation and orientation. This continues to be reviewed to inform future refinements.
