Lechlade-on-Thames

Lechlade-on-Thames is one of many historic towns under heavy pressure from through traffic. Its Market Place has suffered in recent years from the congestion and noise associated with high volumes of traffic and the traffic lights in the centre of town. Air quality is a particular problem.

As part of its emerging comprehensive Neighbourhood Plan, the Town Council is exploring ways to reduce the impact of through traffic. Hamilton-Baillie Associates prepared and presented an initial masterplan for the town in 2014. The plan, to be implemented in phases, involves changes to both the historic Market Square at the heart of the town, a revision of parking arrangements, and measures to reduce speeds.  The masterplan builds aims to strengthen the distinctive and historic qualities of Lechlade, and to reverse the loss of public space to traffic.
